HECUA: Art for social change study away program

In the spring semester of 2019, I had the opportunity to pursue an off-campus study away program in the Twin Cities. HECUA's Art for Social Change program was an essential contribution to my Social Justice education and contributed heavily to my concentration.

The two areas we studied in class were Social Justice Theory & Practice and Art and Social Change in Political, Social, and Historical Context. We analyzed past and present works of socially engaged art and thought critically about how this work impacted people, communities, and the world. This class gave us opportunities to meet with local artists and local art organizations that use social justice as the core of their own work.

A requirement of this program was to complete a semester-long internship with a local organization that uses art and social change in their works. My internship site was the Washburn Blackbox Program where I assisted and mentored students while they created a theatre production based on the social injustices they face and see in our world.

Here you will find access to art projects, blog posts, and other parts of my program experience.
