Washburn high school black box

Washburn High School, in south Minneapolis, was home to my high school experience and my internship experience through the HECUA Art for Social Change program. I also was able to co-teach a dance workshop at their Race 2 Justice Day in 2017 and 2018 and speak at an Ed Talk in Minneapolis as a returning alumnus. The internship I held was with Crystal Spring, the creator of the Blackbox program, where I assisted in teaching youth development and expression through theatre and social justice. I continue to help out in this space as a returning alum and guest artist in the community to support the students and Crystal through this challenging by necessary work.

Race 2 Justice Day (2017)

For a few years, Washburn held a Race 2 Justice day, which was inspired by other Minneapolis Public Schools that had been this work. Inspired by my History of North Minneapolis seminar in 2016, I was able to co-teach the history of Hip Hop with a friend, followed by teaching the students a Hip Hop dance piece.

HECUA: Art for Social Change Internship with Washburn Blackbox (Spring 2019)

Spring semester of 2019, I had the opportunity to intern with Washburn's Blackbox Program through HECUA's Art for Social Change Study Away Program. This was one of the most influential experiences I had as a Social Justice major because I was able to find my passion working with young people and was able to continue social justice theatre work in a different pair of shoes than I previously had done it in high school. Learning to be a mentor to young people through the connection of social justice was one of the most rewarding things I have done. I continue to work weekly with Crystal Spring in the Blackbox today.

Ed Talk: Washburn High School Blackbox (November 2019)

The Blackbox had an opportunity to speak at an Ed Talk event in Minneapolis in November of 2019. I was given the opportunity to speak about youth voice in education as someone who went through this program as a high schooler and a returning alumni supporter of the program.
